Highpoint #9: Mount Arvon, MI

State: Michigan
Highpoint: Mount Arvon
Elevation: 1979 ft

Last Wednesday I texted Kyle on a whim to see if he wanted to go camping. Within on hour we had a yurt on the shore of Teddy Lake in the Upper Peninsula of MI reserved and were looking forward to visiting the highest point of Michigan. How cute is that yurt!? It stands alone on the shores of Teddy Lake, so we had the whole lake to ourselves. Our only neighbors were some loons and frogs. We snuggled up in the cozy yurt, waking up to a thunderstorm in the middle of the night. The canvas roof & walls of the yurt amplified the sound of the rain, and each lightning would flash it light up the whole room! I think the stillness surrounding us made the noise seem extra loud, too. It was worth the loss of sleep to experience it.

In the morning, after breakfast, we hopped into the row boat and set out to explore the lake - it was a gorgeous, overcast, foggy day with a bit of drizzling rain... perfect weather for being on the water. The lake water was dark, almost black, with a reddish rusty tone. As Emerson wrote, "Nature always wears the colors of the spirit," and I grasp this most in greens and blues of trees and leaves and waves.

After our morning at the yurt, we tried to reach the top of Mt. Arvon, the highpoint of MI. It isn't really a peak, but rather a slow incline that takes miles of driving on dirt roads to reach. It rained on our way up, and the roads started to get too muddy and rugged for our car, so we were still about 1/2 a mile away from the top when we stopped. We're calling it done, even though we weren't quite there.

After driving back to the nearest campground, we set up camp and headed to the beach for some relaxation in the sun.
