Lena Lake Backpacking

7/18/2018

We went on our first backpacking trip last weekend! We hiked to Lena Lake in the Olympic National Forest.

We'd read that sites were limited at Lena Lake, so we left early. Luckily, we snagged a sandy spot right on the river . Even though it was July, the overcast skies and wind coming off of the glacial water made it super cold! We kept our fire burning most of the time.

One of the best parts of the trip was our hike out - we ran into two families of mountain goats on the trail!! I've been wanting to see mountain goats in the wild since we moved to Washington. They took us completely by surprise - we rounded a corner and there they were, just having breakfast next to the trail. We kept our distance and actually hiked behind them for a while. The second group was hiking towards us and they got super close to us - we used our sticks to make noise and scared them up the hill while we snuck past. This group had a baby goat with them, so we were extra careful not to make mom & dad angry!

We definitely want to do more backpacking trips in the future. It's taken us a while to work up the nerve to try it and now I'm so glad we have!
