Here I sit, just back from our first trip to Alaska and eager for more. John Muir, the famous naturalist, once said you should never go to Alaska as a young person because you'll never be satisfied with any other place as long as you live... and I think he was on to something.
We took a cruise ship from Seattle up to Glacier Bay and back, stopping at Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Victoria, BC on the way. There are pros and cons to traveling this way - you move slowly, but you get to see a lot along the way, and while you don't get to spend a huge amount of time in any one place, you get to see multiple places in one trip. I think it was great for our first trip - next time we'll probably fly in somewhere more remote and spend an extended amount of time there.

In Skagway, we took a hike and then a scenic train ride through the White Pass which follows the trail that gold miners took up to the Yukon territory during the gold rush.
- It was difficult to get photos from the moving train, but I did my best!
Then, we headed to Glacier Bay, with gorgeous views along the way...

When we got to the main glacier in the park, Marjorie Glacier, the boat parked for an hour and we spent the entire time just staring at the beauty in front of us.
- It's hard to see, but you can kind of see it here: the glacier moving down through the valley at a rate of 15 ft. per day!

We also got to see some whales and other wildlife.

Overall it was a gorgeous trip and we can't wait to visit Alaska again!
