We decided to take a weekend trip to visit Palouse Falls (our state waterfall!) and explore some more of our state! The falls are eastern Washington, a whole region of our state that we have not visited since we drove through it on our way to Seattle 3 years ago. The falls are 60m high and the water flows into the Snake River. Palouse Falls is literally in the middle of nowhere. You drive for miles and miles through fields of waving wheat and wide-open ranch land to get there. Then you walk up to this 115 m canyon and see this raging waterfall... it's so cool!
We drove from our hike at Tallapus and Olallie Lakes to our campground at Potholes State Park. It was a hot, sunny afternoon and our campsite was right on the water, so we read and drank wine in the sunshine for a while after we set up camp.
The next day we took a hike at the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge and we felt like we were hiking in the south. There were signs telling us to watch out for rattlesnakes, porcupines, and many different birds. We spotted a mule deer, a lazuli bunting, and a western kingbird.
After our hike, we drove to Palouse Falls, through the semi-arid, super flat ranch land. We listened to local radio stations playing folk and twangy country music the whole way.
It was great to get away for the weekend and to explore a part of our state that we hadn't seen much of before!
