We've lived in the shadow of this beauty for 4 years now. In Seattle, people say "The mountain is out!" to announce a clear, sunny day. On these days, the peak is visible from our living room window. We've had the chance to visit Mount Rainier National Park several times since living here - each time we leave hoping to return soon!
The highest point on the mountain is 14,410ft. We had plans to hike to Camp Muir, which is the furthest you can go without a climbing permit and some serious mountaineering skills. Unfortunately, due to some minor injuries and some issues with scheduling, we won't be able to make it up even that far. Even the hike up to Camp Muir is 8 miles with 4640 ft of elevation gain, a steep climb through snowfields. We're disappointed that we won't be able to look down from way up on the mountain, but we're honestly so grateful for the time we have been able to spend in the park, the trails we've been able to hike, and the everyday beauty of this giant that we've been able to enjoy.
