Highpoint #11: Harney Peak, SD

9/25/2014
State: South Dakota
Highpoint: Harney Peak
Elevation: 7242 ft

Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Harney Peak (renamed Black Elk Peak in 2016*) is actually the highest peak between the Rocky Mountains and the Pyreneese Mountains in France!

This was a beautiful hike.  The whole journey is about 7 miles with 1100 feet elevation gain. It took us a few hours - we kept stopping to take in the views! The trail begins by taking you through open fields of wild flowers. The day we did this hike was cloudy and 65 degrees and absolutely perfect for hiking. After a mile or so in open fields, you begin to climb up, through a dense forest. The views are incredible. Jagged rocks jutting into the sky, and blue hills rolling on for miles...

We finally reached the top where there is an old watch tower with views of four states: South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Montana.

We loved this hike and would totally do this highpoint again!
